Master the Game by Tony Robbins

Tony Robbins is an American businessman, author, and philanthropist. He became well known from his infomercials and self-help books: Unlimited Power,Unleash the Power Within and Awaken the Giant Within. He has coached some of the world’s most high-profile people, including Oprah Winfrey, Andre Agassi, Bill Clinton, Paul Tudor Jones, Serena Williams, Leonardo DiCaprio, Nelson Mandela, Princess Diana, and Mother Teresa.

Rock-Bottom Story:

Tony had an abusive childhood experience. After leaving home at 17 and living on his own, he later found himself alone in his 400 sq. ft. apartment having to wash dishes in his bathtub. He was at a poor period in his business with only $19.10. This event brought him to make a life-changing decision, that he would never again settle for less than he could be.

Here are Tony Robbins’ Tips to Awesomeness:

1. Find Your True Gift

Find what’s really going to fulfill you. It falls under one of these 3 gifts:
(a) talent— are you the artist / creator / producer who is really skillful in what you do?
(b) manager / leader — do you love handling people? are you passionate about motivating and empowering them?
(c) entrepreneur — can you create the vision, attract the team and find the talented individuals to work on it?

We have them all, but pick the one that truly satisfies you and greatly benefits your quality of life.

2. Raise Your Standards

Turn your shoulds into MUST. Do things that must be done whether they’re convenient or not. Get clear on your MUST, then find a way to get to it. Create rituals that will meet your standards.

Your MUST becomes part of who you are. We act based on who we believe we are.

He quotes Michael Jordan when asked what makes him great:
“My competition is with the best I can be.”

3. Change Your Limiting Beliefs

Tony has a clear illustration of how beliefs can determine your success in what he calls “The Success Cycle”.

the-success-cycle

It starts with unlimited potential, but many people don’t take the necessary action (MUST), so they get limited results. The results will reinforce an established belief (not-for-me belief, not-good-enough belief, always-a-failurebelief, etc.), thus limiting the potential. The cycle continues and gets even worse (“poor gets poorer”).

GOOD NEWS is you can change the cycle by changing your beliefs.

Beliefs are practiced thoughts that you hold on to for so long. What are your thoughts about yourself? Do you believe who you are is all you can be? That what you can do is all you got, because you are “not gifted” like others are? Are they really true? Or are these only excuses we make to justify the way we are living our lives, because “it’s just the way it has always been”?

As Henry Ford put it, Whether you think you can, or you think you can’t — you’re right.”

And I’m here asking you to know that you can be, do and have anything. Believe it!

4. Add Value

Step-up your game and give more than you expect to receive. Tony also faced several disappointments despite all the ‘business tools’ he had. At one point, he got really frustrated why it was not still working for him, and he realized he was so focused on what he was not getting and not on what he was not giving.

The secret to living is giving. -  Tony Robbins

5. Progress Equals Happiness

Beginnings are easy and exciting. But after a while when we stop growing, things aren’t as exciting as they were anymore. Tony says the key to happiness is progress. Because progress makes us feel alive.

The progress we are looking for is the person we are becoming.

However, we associate growth with pain. And the fear of failure prevents us from making progress. What we don’t realize is we are still making progress even when we fail. In fact, we grow more in failure. Because in it, we learn the lessons that will make us a better person.

6. Mastery is the Game

According to Tony Robbins, the two master skills that are key to an extraordinary life are:
1. Science of Achievement — there is a science to money, relationship, health and other areas in life that if we can follow and apply, then we will achieve our goals.

While ‘science’ is applicable to everyone, ‘art’ is unique. Each one of us will perceive it differently, which is why the second master skill is an art. And life without this art is ugly.

2. Art of Fulfillment — there are 2 elements of fulfillment
(a) contribution— find your gift, then give it away with love, intensity, beauty and unselfishness
(b) appreciation —many of us are good givers but poor receivers; love yourself because it will be you connecting with you, so you can connect with the real part of other people

Success without fulfillment is the ultimate failure.  –  Tony Robbins

7. Decisions, Not Conditions

The most important decision you can make, above any on the face of the earth, is deciding that no matter what happens in your life, no matter what happens, you’re gonna live in a beautiful state.  –  Tony Robbins

Our life depends on the decisions we make, not the conditions we meet.

Pain is one thing, suffering is another. Tony says suffering is ‘me obsessing about me’. It comes from focusing on what you can get.

Life is not about me. It’s about we.  –  Tony Robbins

Instead, shift your focus on giving of yourself. Be of service. Do what you love. As great as it is important to achieve, it is more important to enjoy.
